About Our Blog

We lived in Montrose for 24 years and thoroughly enjoyed sharing the environment with a multitude of other species. This site has been designed to share knowledge with like minded persons in the area or those with a broader interest in the natural history of South East Australia. Most photographs have been taken with a Canon 60 D, some with an Olympus SP-550-UZ and a few are coverted from film prints or negatives, hence the poor quality. All photographs are copyright, if you would like a copy please email me.

We are now moving to Far North Queensland and swapping dry sclerophyll forest for tropical rainforest.

The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect
In chaos theory, the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions, where a small change at one place in a nonlinear system can result in large differences to a later state. The name of the effect, coined by Edward Lorenz, is derived from the theoretical example of a hurricane's formation being contingent on whether or not a distant butterfly had flapped its wings several weeks before.
